It\nwas an order rather than a suggestion, and Chris already knew he was\ngoing to obey. Because the other incontrovertible fact about what was\nhappening: he couldn\u2019t fight it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helpless\nto do otherwise, he let Tara lead him the rest of the way home, up\nthe front steps and into the living room. Amala\u2019s parents were\nwatching TV. Chris watched them, petrified in anticipation of their\nreaction to his new feminine form, but they simply looked up and\nsmiled as he came in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Amala\u2019s\nmom asked, \u201cNice walk?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tara\ntossed her bag down on the couch. \u201cYeah, gave Chris a taste of\nFinsbury Park.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desperate\nfor a familiar face, Chris asked, \u201cWhere\u2019s Amala.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her\nmom gave an indulgent chuckle. \u201cYour fianc\u00e9’s a lightweight,\nChris.\u201d Her eyes returned to the TV, as she explained, \u201cJet lag\ncaught up with her; she crashed almost as soon as you two left.\u201d \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\nwas left, standing awkwardly, in an unfamiliar room and an unfamiliar\nbody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nquestion reverberated through his body. He ought to be panicking.\nOught to be finding a way to fight and scream and fix whatever it was\nthat Tara had done. His eyes fell on Tara\u2019s bag. But,\ninstead, he was awash with an odd sort of false inertia. Instead,\nhe found himself yawning and turning meekly for the hallway. \u201cI\nthink I\u2019ll turn in too. Jet lag…\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A\nchorus of smiles and \u2018good nights\u2019 followed him up the stairs. On\nthe top step, he turned back around and met Tara\u2019s gaze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chris\nturned away as his face flushed. He made his way through the dimly\nlit hallway. Cracking open the door to the guest room he saw Amala\nlying on the bed, fast asleep. He hesitated.
