The Great Shift hit in the middle of my trip to Japan. I was in my hotel room, sitting on the couch and getting ready to peruse the television options when suddenly I was lying down on a couch that looked identical in a hotel room that looked like mine. For a second I thought I’d passed out but then a stranger loomed over me and began speaking rapidly in Japanese.
I didn’t understand him – my Japanese wasn’t great – but he seemed agitated.
“Hold on, slow down,” I said, and instantly registered that my voice had changed.
Now that I had a chance to adjust, I could feel that I was bottomless. The guy helped me sit up and I was shocked to discover that I was a woman.
